Top performers in Oregon surgical and heart failure careAt the completion of two years of work with the 11 Oregon hospitals participating in the Surgical Care Improvement Project/Heart Failure Initiative (SCIP/HF), Acumentra Health is please to recognize six hospitals for achieving high performance on patient-centered measures of clinical care. Their quality improvement professionals, doctors, nurses, and other staff collaborated to overcome the barriers to excellence that affect health outcomes and patients' experience in every hospital. SCIP/HF, sponsored by Medicare, supported hospitals in improving performance on a set of 8 measures for surgical safety and 4 measures for heart failure care. Acumentra Health is recognizing hospitals that provided patient care that met all measures in each set for nearly all of their eligible patients during the first two quarters of 2010. Outstanding Care Awards (at least 95% of patients)
Excellent Care Awards (at least 90% of patients)
“These hospitals engaged staff in culture change that influenced every aspect of care,” said Ruth Medak, MD, FACP, Acumentra Health’s associate medical director. “It wasn’t about trying harder to do things better, but about rethinking goals and processes. They left behind familiar ways of doing things and adopted new strategies or redesigned work flows to increase efficiency and reliability." Frontline staff played key roles in the effort. "Initially, collecting real-time data for quality checks felt like a huge burden, but physicians and quality improvement staff came to see that data was essential for achieving excellence in care delivery and outcomes," said Dr. Medak. "Our initiative consistently focused on aiming for 100% by implementing processes that make it easy to do things correctly every time and to identify oversights promptly.” Acumentra Health commends these hospitals for the diligent effort that led to their achievements. |
